Brinda Lane-Pumphrey is a Colorado-based artist whose work is deeply inspired by the natural world. From an early age, Brinda was captivated by the magic of creating art, starting with the simple joy of moving a crayon across paper. Over time, she experimented with a variety of mediums, ultimately discovering a passion for painting.
Self-taught in oil painting, Brinda began painting landscapes and animals in middle school and later studied both art and photography in college. Throughout her life, art has been a constant source of solace, helping Brinda through difficult times while providing a meaningful outlet for self-expression.
A pivotal moment in Brinda’s artistic journey came after a rim-to-rim hike in the Grand Canyon—a journey that deeply reignited her passion for landscape painting. Emerging from the canyon after five days covered in red dust, Brinda felt reborn. The experience reinforced her intuitive use of color, often exaggerating hues to reflect not just the physical beauty of a place, but the emotions it evokes. Brinda specializes in painting from personal experiences, particularly the dramatic landscapes and unique colors of the Southwestern United States.
Recently Brinda has explored a new acrylic series that focuses on capturing the lingering traces of time in the natural world—what she calls "echoes of the past." Through overlapping images of nature, Brinda creates an ephemeral effect with subjects fading into their surroundings. Flowers that bloom but are short-lived, animals that wander through the landscape only to move on—all of these elements come together to express the fleeting nature of life. She uses transparency and black outlining, often giving her paintings a stained-glass appearance. This series was inspired by an abstract landscape workshop in early 2020. The influence of that workshop simmered in Brinda’s mind for several years, evolving into the paintings she is now creating. The common thread running through these works is the idea of subjects fading into the environment, a theme that continues to emerge as the series evolves.
Brinda’s oil paintings are primarily focused on realistic landscapes and close-up depictions of flowers, characterized by rich colors and fluid lines. Her landscapes are often described as intimate, drawing viewers into the scene as if they were walking alongside her on a hiking trail. Unlike expansive, sweeping vistas, Brinda’s compositions capture the viewer's perspective up close, creating a personal, immersive experience. She uses photographs taken during her hikes as reference but prefers working from the comfort of her studio, where she can focus on the details and the emotional connection to each scene.
Brinda is a member of D’art 360 Gallery, and 40 West Arts. She actively enters her work in group shows throughout the Denver area. Past exhibits have been in the Summer Art Market at the Art Students League of Denver, Colorado Gallery of the Arts, Foothills Art Center Gallery, James J Richey Gallery, Niza Knoll Gallery, NEXT Gallery, and Evergreen Center for the Arts.
