My Connection With Grand Canyon

The first time I set eyes on the Grand Canyon was on the eve of a rim to rim hike. I stood at the edge of the North Rim looking across and couldn’t imagine how we would make our way down, across, and back up the other side. It looked impossible. I had no idea that I would emerge on the South Rim five days later with such a strong, spiritual connection to a place that I imagined was just a big canyon in the desert, dusty and barren. I didn’t expect to see so much color and life in the canyon. I didn’t expect it to change my life, but it did.

Since that first visit I have felt myself drawn to return to Grand Canyon again and again. It is more of a need than a longing; a need to descend into its depths, to take in the spectacular scenery, to breath in the experience. As an artist, I feel an intense desire to paint what I love about Grand Canyon.  When I look at the canyon I see a living place with rich colors and textures, dramatic views, and complex depth.  I share my vision of the Grand Canyon with others through my paintings. I often paint views that only those who have hiked into the canyon have seen, allowing those who have been there to relive the experience, and those who haven’t to see what a special place it is.
