This gallery has a variety of artworks on paper that my include watercolor paintings, tempera ink resist with watercolor, oil pastel, drawing, or other mediums. When I hike or camp I often carry paper and art supplies so I can make sketches and paintings plein air.
Yellow Lily
Yellow Lily
Tempera Ink Resist with Watercolor, 11” x 11”
This painting was created with a tempera ink resist watercolor technique. Yellow Lily has delicate, flowing petals with a warm sandstone colored background. The tempera ink resist technique creates interesting texture and an aged look where the ink leaves speckles on the paper. Brush strokes left from the tempera application add depth and texture as well.

Hens and Chicks
Hens and Chicks
Tempera Ink Resist with Watercolor, 11 1/8” x 11”
A colorful hens and chicks succulent plant grows out of textured rocks. Warm and cool greens fade into pale violet tips. The tempera ink resist technique creates interesting textures left by the ink after washing. The original brushstrokes from the tempera paint add subtle depth and texture giving it an aged look. The lovely curves and lines of the plant inspired me to make this piece.

El Mirador
El Mirador is on the island of Cozumel in Mexico. The waves have carved a natural arch in the stone that reaches out into the ocean. This painting was made with oil pastels.

Moonflower
Moonflower
Tempera ink resist with watercolor.
These beautiful white flowers bloom in Grand Canyon. The tempera ink resist technique is a multi-step process. The image is carefully painted with tempera paint, leaving anything that is to remain black uncovered. A layer of India ink is painted over the entire surface, and then gently washed off. As the ink washes away the image is revealed. My final step was to add color with watercolor paints.

Goosenecks
Goosenecks

This image was painted plein air at Goosenecks State Park in southern Utah. The river twists and turns around canyon walls that were carved by the water. The rock exposed on the canyon wall creates an interesting ribbon-like pattern.

Leafy Sea Dragon
Leafy Sea Dragon
tempera ink resist
A colorful leafy sea dragon floats in a blue and violet background. Tempera ink resist is a multi-step process that involves drawing the image, painting around it with tempera paint, covering the entire image in India ink, then washing off the India ink. The ink only remains on the paper where there was no tempera paint. To finish this it was painted with watercolors. This technique leaves an interesting texture. The brushstrokes or sponge texture from applying the tempera paint are still visible.
